Grow Light Reviews Can Be Misleading
Too often, grow light reviews or comparisons will focus on PAR, spectrum, OR PPFD, or they will highlight small data samples that elevate their marketing priorities. This study conducted by Kind LED Grow Lights compares BOTH the PAR and PPFD of the leading grow lights on the market for a true side by side comparison.
PAR, or photosynthetically active radiation, refers to the amount of energy contained in the photosynthetic range (400nm to 700nm) that plants use to achieve photosynthesis. PPFD (photosynthetic photon flux density) is the measurement of the number of photons within that energy that actually reaches the plant’s surface.
PPFD has become the most popular measurement by which to compare grow lights. Higher readings facilitate better, faster growth and deeper canopy penetration.
PPFD can be easily manipulated in grow light reviews because it is a spot measurement, so the reading changes drastically based on height and location of the measurement taken in relationship to the plant. If a PPFD measurement is posted, but it is not disclosed how high or where it was taken, then it’s basically meaningless.
Even a spectrometer, which gives the individual wavelength intensity in proportion to the overall spectrum of the lamp, must be coupled with the PPFD readings in order to paint a complete picture of the spectral range and quantity of the usable light being emitted from the lamp.
